The Battle at Sorrow Street
Once upon a time I shut
my eyes and saw yellow stalks
waving in a warm summer breeze
boundless horizon stretching beyond
Twice upon a time I reached
out and seized it, took the boundary between the Earth and the sky and
made it my own,
pulled it apart stitch by stitch
and crawled inside
pinched its thorny seams shut again until
the sky ran pinkish-red with the blood from my fingertips.
Still, thrice upon a time I stood
on the boundary between life and death,
took a handful of each and cried
pools of despair into them until
they both reflected back
crystal, calm, cool, placid.
These lakes I spilled
into the blue of sky
crystal droplets and clung
to the surface, ocean-blue and clear as day.
After a moment they slid down in a torrent
pelted the ground
flooded my mind and
washed me away.
It is here that I now lie
head submerged in deafening silence
waiting to evaporate
