When the boy fell from the sky, he carried with him the last remaining book describing the inner reality of stars. That he did not seem to obey the laws of gravity with as much precision as every other being should have been a clue as to what was to follow his stately descent, but in truth, pretty much everyone missed the obvious. Not for the first time, of course, ours being a species remarkably consistent with our inconsistencies. But that is indeed what happened in this particular and particularly unusual instance.
He fell for days, frequently sent aloft again by an updraft, or sideways by some prevailing breeze or another, seemingly random, yet possessed of grace and not a little choreography, in retrospect, that is. When he was first observed, most estimated he would fall somewhere in the vicinity of the Capital, yet as time passed, and his downward direction became erratic and ephemeral, the exact landing spot became a matter of conjecture. Except where it became of interest to the odds makers, that is. Yet in the end, everyone lost whatever bets they'd placed, because before the boy actually landed on the ground, an enormous and stately tree intervened.
