The story thus far:
Nathan Ransom (age 15), A.E. Clipson (age 45), & Traroth the dragon (ageless) are on their way to rescue Nathan's mother, Nicole Ransom, and their friend Jonas Work from the evil 'Dark Order'. On the way, Nathan finds sleep somewhat difficult.
Our heroes traveled all that day, until the Sun's third satellite turned the other cheek to her all-powerful master, and the ever-glow himself reddened the horizon; whereupon they stopped at an inn, at the edge of a canyon, as deep as a mountain is tall, whose northern rim was thickly forested in spruce-trees and whose southern rim was bare red stone. It was on the wooded side they stopped, with the sunset in their right eyes.
When she saw them come in, the landlady said: 'It will cost you fifty each, for every night'.
Said Clipson: '"That's daylight robbery". Give the children a discount for their age, and we'll write you a recommendation. Refuse, and we'll report you to the Better Business Bureau'.
She answered: 'I'll make it 25 each night', and he paid.
After that, the guests were all settled in comfortable beds, in a room overlooking the canyon. Some time after midnight, Nathan was assaulted by the Nightmare, and went outside. He found Clipson and Traroth on the balcony, with the starry sky all around them and the canyon hidden in the darkness below, except for the endless roar of the river. Clipson was deep in converse with his dragon; but they saw Nathan come, and Clipson asked him: 'What brings you out here, at this hour?'.
Nathan: 'I can't sleep; so I came out here'.
Clipson: 'Rightly done, my boy. Sleep is always disturbed by dreams and terrors and arousals of pleasure; the only true rest is in meditation'.
Afterward, Nathan and Clipson went back in-doors, and Traroth and Clipson put a bridle on the Nightmare, and told Nathan: 'Come and see us again, if you have another'.
