Soft beads of rain fell on the tin roof which made it hard to fall asleep. As long as I was awake I was reminded of how cold it was. Keeping the fire burning in the old wood stove was a task for sure but even worse at night. Up and down all night it seemed. You would think there would be an easier way to keep the house warm but in this day and age this was as good as it was gonna get.
Getting up to toss another log into the stove I happen to look out the window of the second story barn loft and see her standing there in the rain. Granted it wasn’t really freezing out or anything but to me it was freezing cold. I sat there in a chair close to the window and watched her for a while. She seemed at peace really. But what I found weird was she was just standing there looking up into the dark night sky letting the rain drench her every existence.
I’ve known this girl for a very long time to be honest but rarely interacted with her. No real reason why, I just never saw the need to open a dialog with her. That never stopped me from noticing her. You see her families house was right next to ours so I’ve kinda grown up with her really. She has always been an odd sort. My mother always used to say she was up to no good somehow.
At 23 I wasn’t surprised to see her standing in the rain although normally she would dance around and splash about in the puddles of water. This time was different however. She was just standing out in the rain looking up into the cloudy night sky. Curiosity finally got the better of me. I had to go out and ask her. Quickly getting dressed and making my way down the ladder, I stepped outside in the rain.
As I approached her I noticed she was smiling and seemed rather content at the moment. She knew I was there as well.
“What are you doing just standing in the rain?” I asked her as gingerly as possible.
Without looking down or over at me she softly replied,
“Every time I come out in the rain I always dance around. You know this, you watch me all the time”
“Well yes I won’t lie, I do watch you out of genuine curiosity. So why do you just stand and let the rain fall on you this time?” I responded being as honest as I possibly could.
“Today I decided to let the rain dance on me instead, seems only fair really”
