Book Review: The Rental Heart, by Kirsty Logan
I am a big fan of short stories, so I bought this on a whim at a book signing, but left it on the bookshelf until recently. I should have got to it sooner.
These stories are short, powerful, clever, sexy, melancholy, luscious. Some are historical, some fairy-tale, some fantastical, some vividly erotic (and beautifully written, which I am in awe of, since sex may be the hardest human activity to narrate well).
I particularly liked UNDERSKIRTS which is a kind of historical, political, aristocratic, lesbian Rashomon; and MATRYOSHKA, which shifts the POV of a well-known fairy tale subtly and unexpectedly.
I didn't like every story in the collection equally well, but the many I loved more than made up for the few that didn't quite work for me.
