I live my life in reverse. An early idyllic childhood that gave way at the start of my teen years to some of life's hardest challenges. I used writing as an escape and to process things not understood.
Once I became an adult, I became a computer programmer. I helped create, build, and maintain many websites for various companies. As the internet grew, so did I, until I realized after many years that I missed connecting to nature, people, and non-flat food.
I switched to photo editing and worked on many wedding albums. I always loved the happiness and beauty in the pictures. In my spare time, I would restore photos for people who suffered a natural damage phenomenon, such as hurricanes, fire, and tornadoes.
I was diagnosed with an incurable condition called Crohn’s Disease in my early 20's. This forced many self-reflections and taught me patience and to focus on the positive. I am also insanely klutzy. These two things offer a continuous stream of fodder for my writing.
I have published a children's book and a few poems in various magazines and books, but I found that I did not enjoy writing as a way to make money.
At the age of 36, I started to revisit writing for the joy that it brings me, and within the last year have focused on trying different styles and finding a rhythm that fits me best. I love Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss, Edgar Allen Poe, and many others. I love irony and humor and try my best to incorporate it into my work. I also love the beauty in tragically sad or dark pieces. There is a beauty and rhythm to all things. Unnoticed excellence in the mundane.
I currently live in lower Alabama, on the Gulf Coast–a transplanted Yankee–with my three children and partner.
First writing selection
We are all grains of sand
Grains of sand in a vast dry land
Vast dry land scorched by the sun
Until we all come undone
Undone in heat and primal flame
Starting back from whence we came
Came we did from a distant fire
An ember of celestial attire
Attire birthed from a sound
The sound of OM where all is found
Found inside a mystical syllable
Everything and nothing willable tillable
Second writing selection
If I haven't had my coffee
I can be more than a bit bossy
drinking while it's hot
straight from the coffee pot
black and plain please, not frothy
Chemical energy hits my brain
pumped directly through the veins
The day can now begin
settled in my skin
as long as the caffeine remains
Take it away and you shall see
A very different side of me
touch the pot and die
I dare you to try
You have until the number 3
Third writing selection
The fish bakes
in the sweltering heat of the sun
a plastic tupperware container
three feet from the water.
It's jaws SNAP open
and shut as it gasps for air,
over to me
as I sit and stare
while eating my
juicy green apple
I packed as a snack
