A Lady's Manifesto: Post-Feminism &
the limitations of being born a woman
Feminists like to say men and women are equal
when I was young, I believed this to be true
that anything a man cold do, I could do too
But the fact of the matter is,
we're not the same..
I for one, cannot head out into the night
alone for fears that someone will follow,
attack, or harass me
I cannot act impulsively with every person
I meet romantically or else be deemed a whore,
a slut, a homewrecker, damaged goods, a bad woman
I can't assert my independence or I'm deemed
too masculine, too strong, cold-blooded
And if I cry or show any extra amount of emotion,
I'm hysteric, I'm PMSing, I'm histrionic-
as my first boyfriend so lovingly put it
Men will never understand what it means to bleed
every month, to have your emotions flow like the tides
and to have to bear the pain each and every single month
Men will never understand that are bodies, are not our own
we're controlled by our governments- forced to breed children,
forced to take hormones so that men don't become fathers-
when they could take one pill, once a month and do the same
Men will never understand how society puts our bodies on a pedestal,
pushes our minds aside, and sells our sex to the highest bidder
As girls, we are conditioned to believe our skin is not perfect,
our hair should be bleached and dyed and cut, our lips and eyes
to be stained with chemicals, powders and washes and creams
to look younger and whiter, and clearer, and more beautiful
Because we women, are not beautiful in our own fucking skin
We are fat shamed, slut shamed, made to feel ashamed for the
clothing we wear in schools so as to not tempt the boys
We are put into boxes since childhood on where we should be
how we compare.
We grow depressed and people don't understand why..
with all of these emotions and societal pressures, we are stronger
than men. We are wiser. We are smarter. We are more compassionate,
We should have buildings erected in our genitals image like men do in skyscrapes,
we should have wars made in our names like men have for an entire lifetime,
we should own armies, build power structures, have God itself portrayed in our own image like men do..
But we don't.
We watch. Quietly as we are told. Decently as we are taught.
Until enough is enough.
No. I don't believe men and women are equal.
I believe we're better in every single way...
We are goddesses.. with the power to create life itself within us..
We are nurturers.. helping our families, healing our wounds and theirs..
We are lovers.. with the most gorgeous of features, unique in every way..
This is a post-feminist, gender-blending, binary-is-dead world.
Who run the world.. girls.
You are absolutely and beautifully free to be whoever it is you want to be
with all the consent, respect, and love..
And I pray to existence itself that someday soon, every single individual
that identifies as a woman will feel that within every single atom
of their being.
