I landed my first paid writing gig when I was 14. But it wasn't glamourous. I re-wrote the leaflet copy for an Indian restaurant, who decided I must be the kid for the job because I delivered their newspapers every morning! I made £50, a princely sum back in 1990. I've made a living as a writer since my mid-20s. So I've always thought of writing as a business.
But I also think of writing as a practice. Because even when we write for money, we're never just writing for money. There's always something more to be learned.
