Are you an artist?
I can hear the rumblings already to that question ......"Did this dude really just ask that question? On Ello of all places?"
.....but don't we all know people who are working in a
profession they are good at....maybe very, very good at but have no passion for
it? Have you not seen it? No life behind their movement, no fire in their eyes?
Inside and outside of the arts, it's true. We find these people. Their work is
merely a means to a paycheck. That's it.
As we begin a new work week, I'd ask you to consider the
question seriously. This question though is not simply directed at dancers,
sculptors, graphic designers, and the like already in their chosen line of work.....it
is also intended (more importantly) for the individuals who are not working in
their desired field of choice, yet aspire to work in the arts. It is intended
for the truck driver, the call center operators, the couriers, the bus boys, the
assembly line workers, the secretary, the customer service specialists, the
valets, the food service specialists, the retail specialists, the janitors, etc.
The work that is in large part could be considered (but not limited to) merely
mundane or rigid or repetitive or simply necessary but not at all an esteemed
Why is it important to ask? Answer that question and you can
easily determine, if you were in your desired field of choice today, whether it would be simply a paycheck or an absolute passion. Artists are more than merely dancers, writers, designers, or musicians. Wherever they are, whatever they are doing they are artists. They look at life through the lens of an artist. It is, in fact, a way of life for
Take a writer out of his environment and put him to work on a landfill, he'll use the experience to come up with a script. Take the microphone away from the singer and put her to work as a secretary in a doctor's office, she'll use the stories she hears to come up with lyrics. Take the dancer and put him to work on a construction site, he'll use the movement he learns to come up with new choreography. Take a sculptor from her studio and put her to work at a fast food chain, she'll become a talented culinary artist. Art is life.....or you could say it is a passion for life
and an expression of it. The act of creation. Artists take the elements from
their internal and/or external environment and shape them into an expression of
who they are and how they see the world around them. Wherever they are......Whatever
they are doing.......Artists are........
Whether you're on the stage or serving tables at a restaurant, there is an art to both. Your approach determines everything. So I ask, are you an artist?
