A short(ish) excerpt from my sci-fi romance book as requested by dear @ellowrites
"The talk about an unknown agent possibly from EWO has caused a curious murmur in the room and I’m watching Beauregard squinting his eyes and leaning back as if he tries to remember something. He’s looking at me with his head slightly tilted to the side when he finally speaks.
”I’m not sure he has to be from an organization. You have become almost like a romantic figure to the people, I mean most people have heard of a female agent with pink hair by now. I hear they call you Blush in the Wastelands too, after you brought down that group… Greypelts was it?” Sighing I shrug at him, I’ve never bothered listening to the street gossip about me and I’m not really in the mood of listening now. It’s distracting, they don’t know me. No one does.
”Well, he didn’t say anything else, only that I was no threat to him and he would come pick me up later.” Suddenly I find myself needing that refill of my coffee as the meaning of the words are sinking in. They didn’t see what I see, they have no idea what I’m up against. But I do. Deep inside I know I won’t stand a chance. My boss is walking up to me, I can hear the pitter-patter of her heels before I catch her ponytail rocking from side to side in the corner of my eye. She’s placing a cool hand on my shoulder in an assertive gesture, as if she was reading my mind.
”We’ll have special surveillance on you Tallis, perhaps if we catch this guy he can lead us to Eglantine.” Chief Sauvage’s calming voice is a weird contrast to her restless drumming fingers on me.
The meeting appears to be over, she must have made that little gesture telling everybody show’s over. Chairs are creaking as people get up and I can’t help feeling like I’ve humiliated myself by not only revealing I kind of have the hots for the mystery agent who nearly kicked my ass in addition to becoming some kind of target.
”Perhaps we can turn this into something positive, him targeting me, I mean.” I’m trying to sound optimistic as I look up at Sauvage who’s staring out the window.
”My thoughts exactly.” She’s smiling, still facing the window, and I’m oddly comfortable knowing she has no problem sacrificing me if it would give Cassiopeia more intel on whoever has kidnapped Eglantine. I’m her asset after all, a shielding carapace, with only the smallest pearl of a pink soul left in me."
