The Big Fish & The Little Bird
A little bird would spend time singing and resting in a quiet part of a secluded forest. In this forest was a pond and it was fed by a stream and in the pond lived a lonely fish. The fish had been there for a while & was quite fat.
At first they ignore each other but eventually small conversations were had and one thing led to another. They soon fell madly in love. The fish & the bird.
Now all the woodland was in abuzz with talk of this impossible relationship. Creatures would wonder: where will they consummate their love? How will they consummate their love? After all, one is airborne and the other aquatic. The excitement had the forest filled with anticipation and speculation.
One evening, a local boy wandered into that part of the forest and found the huge fish in a pond fed by a tiny stream. Filled with greed, he was about to grab it, take it home and cook it. But before he could snatch the fish, the little bird began attacking him. The boy fought valiantly but eventually he ran away. He returned soon after with other men and they threw nets that captured the tiny bird.
The fish now full of despair broke the cardinal rule of the animal kingdom and spoke directly to the men. She professed her admiration for man and his ingenuity, his guile and his generosity and she begged for the life of the little bird for she loved him so. She explained the width, the depth and the circumference of her love for the little bird.
The boy stood shocked then said he would release the little bird if the fish could answer one question. The fish agreed.
The boy asked ‘If a fish and a bird can fall in love, where will they live?’
The bird replied ‘They live in their love sir, for love is an endless sea and an eternal sky where not even humility and joy can contain two hearts that live as one.’
The boy looked at the other men and they were all deeply impressed so then they released the little bird. The bird flew back to its branch and sung a glorious song. The fat fish continued to swim in her little pond.
It is said to this day, if you go to the secluded forest, you will see the big fish and the tiny bird basking in their eternal love...❁
