The clinic… huh what a way to state the obvious! thought Zac. His mother opened the gate and they walked to the clinc. Another dead end… what is this doc gonna say? Zac waited outside in the reception staring at a wallpaper. “Hello you must be Zac’s mother” Zac looked up. At first sight, the tall, lanky, bespectacled doctor didn’t really look very experienced. Who knows… never judge a book by its cover.. “Yes Doctor” said his mother. “Please come in I would like to meet you first” Zac waited outside. Sitting on the chair with his legs up, he noticed that there was nobody else in the room.
At that moment he realized how lonely he was. He hadn’t attended school in a while and nobody seemed to care. His so called “friends” were nowhere in sight. Zac started banging the back of his head against the wall as he sat. It didn’t really hurt him. The pain of going through this made him feel worthless. What is life without love? thought Zac.
Drifting into a series of thoughts Zac continued banging his head against the wall. Staring into the darkness he knew that there was no light at the end of the tunnel. That was just a myth. “Zac could you come in?” said Dr John. Zac violently shook his head sideways; his head was swollen.”Well, in that case let me make myself comfortable.I am Dr John” continued the doctor as he sat opposite to Zac. “Let me tell you before I start that whatever happens between us is strictly confidential” He noticed that his mother was still in the doctor’s cabin.
From then on it was a series of revelation. “Do you feel like dying?” Zac nodded “I feel worthless Doc!” “I understand but please don’t lose hope. Stay with me. Now, do you hear voices when nobody is around?” How did he know this? wondered Zac. “Yes” replied Zac. “Have you ever had sex with Emily?” continued the Doctor. Zac was taken aback. Such an abashed question in an orthodox society. That moment Zac realized, Emily was way too orthodox. In all the time they had been together they hadn’t even hugged!
“No. We are just kids” replied Zac in a disgusted tone. Dr John just ignored. Wait a minute! How does he know about Emily? Oh, mom must have told him. “She is a traitor” said a voice. Zac ignored. “Well please join me inside I guess I know what’s going on.” said the doctor.
Zac followed the doctor into the cabin. “Zac is suffering from a major depressive disorder with hallucinations” said the doctor addressing his mother. Hallucinations? Am I a lunatic? Depression?! Zac was shocked. He never really expected a logical explanation to his current situation but he knew the doc was right. His mothers eyes welled up. Zac couldn’t stand his mother crying.
The doctor advised his mother to keep away all sharp items and to spend more time with him. “Do what he loves to do. It is important that you take him out and have fun” On a normal day this would mean heaven to Zac but not today. Thanking the doctor Zac and his mother left the clinic. It was a long arduous journey and Zac knew it was downhill with no brakes on his bike.
