I'm seeing a lot of back-and-forth from folks about racism, of course. That's great. Please keep the conversation going.
What I'm finding myself irritated by is my white friends, especially my white Heathen friends, being all offended by "cowards" calling them "racist" without being able to back up the claim.
I really, really don't think that's the way we should be handling this. I think it's great that we consider racism sufficiently offensive that we take offense to being accused of it. But when somebody calls us racist, shouldn't our response be, "Really? Hm. What made you say so? What do I need to change?"
I do think it's important, especially between the privileged, that we are very clear that we're not hunting down racist people, we're educating about and fighting against racist behaviors and deconstructing racist systems. It's important because when we label people racist, we're locking them into the very bad behavior we want them to stop exhibiting.
Racism isn't something we ARE, it's something we DO. We can't easily change what we are. We CAN control what we DO, and we are absolutely responsible for that.
