“If I could go back I wouldn’t change a thing.”
But you would.
You wouldn’t have said that awkward line.
Wouldn’t believe that friend who later hurts you.
Wouldn’t have been so open in love if you knew it wouldn’t last forever.
You would have set better boundaries because you now taste the price of their consequence
And wouldn’t have tried that one talent because you know it was a waste of time.
You might have practiced piano more. But then might not have tried the drums.
You might have been kinder to that stranger, but then might have missed that lesson of regret.
You wouldn’t have learned the hard lessons because you now outsmarted them.
And in outsmarting them, you wouldn’t be smart now.
I think what we mean to say when we say
If I could go back I wouldn’t change a thing
I am well with how things turned out
Because of who I am now
And I’m glad I can’t go back and change a thing
(because if I could I totally would)
