"[But other] children are too naughty. Then a harsher method may be necessary. Of course, all my teachers were very kind to me because of my name, Dalai Lama, but they also respected me. At the same time, when I was being taught my lesson -- my elder brother was also with me – my teachers [had] two whips. One whip, yellow whip, that’s supposed to be “holy whip” for “holy student” Dalai Lama. (laughs) But I don’t think that [there is any such thing as] “holy” pain. Pain is pain. (laughs) On my part, [I felt] a little anxiety. I can’t say “holy” anxiety or “holy” pain. So sometimes it is necessary to manipulate fear for a good purpose. Not, of course, always but occasionally the parent showing a little harsh attitude, may be OK. I don’t know – that’s my view."
