In the war against Zeus, Atlas rose as the leader of the opposing side, the Titans. When he lost the war Zeus saved a special type of torture for him. He would have to carry the heavens in his shoulders for the rest of his life. This gained him a reputation as the god of endurance and made him an expert in astronomy which he taught to mankind.
