Mankind was created by Prometheus, god of forethought. His foresight abilities gave him great clarity and a wiseness many would envy. With his abilities he saw that mankind would not be happy with just it's existence. They needed something that would ignite their life and Prometheus saw what it was and it was fire which the gods believed sacred. Nevertheless, he stole fire from heaven, gave it to mankind and then was punished by Zeus who chained him up at the top of a mountain to get his liver eaten forever (it self regenerated since he was an immortal god) by a bird.
