NOT FOR PRINT "Resist" Submissions. @notforprint @wetransfer
This series of Musical Actions, inspired by my involvement in the Occupy movement, explores the intersection of design and music to create performative tools for protest and resistance.
GLOBAL: An Action for One or More Voices
"Lift every voice and sing." The most abstract of my series of Musical Actions, GLOBAL re-imagines a world map as a giant fermata, the musical symbol for "hold indefinitely," along with the instruction "tutti," meaning "everyone."
QUAD: An Action for Handbell Choir
Using the conventions of programming language and Boolean logic, QUAD sets up a series of instructions for a handbell choir performance that allows for chance interactions under a structured form. With a performance layout based on the circle of fifths that is adjustable for various venues, this action is intended as a protest performance in a public space.
Detail from PRIME REDACTION: An Action for Unpitched Percussion
A percussion action for an indeterminate number of players intended to be a protest performance in a public space. This Musical Action layers a series of matrices, each of which highlights rhythmic cells in a different prime numbered pattern. At the end of the piece, the combination of all cells that have been highlighted [as represented by the colored cells] are "redacted." This page reveals the remaining unplayed cells that follow a pattern of prime numbers ... 1, 11, 13, 17, 19, etc.
