Built in 1407, the Five Story Pagoda of Miyajima reflects construction techniques typically associated with Zen Buddhism. It is located behind the Hall of 1000 Tatami Mats if you are walking up from the floating tori gate in Miyajima, Japan. There are a lot of pagodas in Japan, so the challenge I came across was trying to capture how they made you feel as they soar out of the ground. I framed it against the sky to emphasize the winged curve of the roof line, so it ends up looking like a flock of birds soaring through the sky or cranes about to take flight. Full disclosure: I took a bunch of “traditional” shots of the pagoda from straight on that I hated and I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working; it wasn’t until walking away that I found what I wanted and how to make the shot work.
