The little newsletter boom gives email a revival as filtered reading app in a time when it loses its communication appeal to messages services. While needs in digital communication seems to be: more direct/instant/ephemeral, the needs in dealing with digital news seem to be: options to save for later, filtered, curation (not necessarily by news authorities but more individualised: curation by person of trust (s. tinynewsletters trend). curation by person with similar interests instead of algorithm that filters by interests. a person that filters strays and surprises. algorithmic filters often stick too close to the same or (if set for random exploring) get too random-weird. not "human" enough. hard to define what that "human" factor is because it's different for most people. curation by news authorities often has different interests than its readers, can't individualise selected news deeply enough. and of course: it brings just the news of one media outlet while digital news consumption is about being able to read from a variety of publishers.
