Notes on Jan 7th, 2015 Beginning Meditation Class with Mushim
Love when someone asks my questions so I don't have to...
From last night's meditation class: on getting sleepy and handling emotions that arise (and subsequent thoughts/feelings, like anxiety).
Sleepiness generally has two causes: (1) lack of sufficient sleep (when meditating, your body is telling you that you need more sleep), or (2) avoidance (something is hard to face/deal with).
Emotions/anxiety: Useful to examine what is real in your body at the moment (physical manifestations of the feelings, etc.) and to focus on those physical things (as opposed to thoughts/feelings). Also, hopefully the fear/anxiety is not accompanied by actual danger in the moment, so good to hold onto a mantra like "Fear is not danger."
One other thought--the only thing needed for mindfulness meditation is a body and the breath. As long as you are alive, you have both!
