St. Agatha with breast cut off
Oil on panel, 54x27 cm, 2015
Agatha was born in the third century AD, in Catania, Sicily. She came from an illustrious Roman family. After her baptism she decided to live as a virgin. When she rejected the Roman governor of Sicily - Quintianus, she was sent to a brothel as punishment. However, thanks to the support of God, she preserved her virginity. She was then sentenced to torture, during which her breasts were cut off. Finally Agata was thrown on hot coals and died. In the iconography, she is presented during the cutting of her breasts or with her breasts on a platter.
