Just read an article about getting in tune with your inner child, problems we face because we are not and the positive effects this will have in your life. Got me thinking as to when did 'Adult' become a bad thing? In fact most children can’t wait to grow up so maybe inner children want to become inner adults.
I understand the nostalgia around being like a child but there is wonder as you get older as well and in some sense is a deeper, more nuanced and complex sense of wonder. Something is not wonderful only because it is novel but because of a greater understanding of it. A child's wonder and joy at the colour of a leaf, an artist's joy at getting inspiration from the scene, a biologist's wonder at the magic of photosynthesis all are equally real and true but the adults are not discovering their inner child to experience the wonder. It takes the adult understanding, knowledge, experience to appreciate things at a different level because spending the time getting to know something increases the amount and quality of enjoyment.
In the modern world many of us have the luxury of a long adolescence and often stay playful through our lives so maybe we are there already. Maybe its time to embrace your inner adult.
