The Moon in Penumbra. Total Lunar Eclipse. Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. October 8, 2014 6:07 a.m.
Sky watchers in North America, East Asia and Australia are NOW enjoying the total lunar eclipse of October 8, 2014.
From Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, I took this picture during the first phase of the eclipse, when the Moon was already cruising the penumbra. Unfortunately, for observers in Uruguay the moon hid on the horizon and is right now in the phase of totality, which is undoubtedly the most interesting.
The orange color of the moon in this photo is not caused by the eclipse, but due to it being near the horizon, its light must pass through a more extensive layer of atmosphere to reach our eyes and is dispersed. In the totality phase, the Moon turns red.
