I knocked on the door of the home my grandparents built in the 1958 and sold in 1983. The woman who bought it recently, several owners on, was gracious and talked at length, asking many questions about how the house used to be before it was renovated. It was both wonderful and deeply disorienting to be there and see the changes to the dated midcentury home I remembered.
The current owner showed me something found during renovations: a 1969 sports page, carefully folded and nailed inside the wall, obviously put there on purpose. The page is so old that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was still named Alcindor in the featured article. No one in the family still living knows anything about it.
Some families have skeletons in the closet. Mine has sports pages in the wall.
