I read an article on nation building a while back (I can’t find it now, and recall only some of it).
One of the points was that when America or the West installs a democracy, they expect the people to negotiate and cooperate with each other.
Instead, what usually happens first is revenge, as a majority of people who had been out of power turn the tables on the former power group. This can beget a cycle of retribution and lots of societal instability as old slights and new pile up.
What if we had a pretty cooperative democracy for a while, but now we’ve moved into that early democracy phase? Trump energized a bunch of people who had tuned out of politics for quite a while, or who felt their status threatened by social progress. Now striking back is a more...reachable response than going to the negotiation table, and we’re on this merry-go-round.
