Lead Design for Identity, Signage & Environmental Graphics
Architects: Benthem Crouwel Architects
Forum Mittelrhein, a large-scale cultural and retail shopping project is located in Koblenz, Germany, the third largest city in the Rhineland-Palatinate, southeast of Cologne.
Recognizing the urgent need for revitalizing the Zentralplatz of the Koblenz, city officials commissioned this project for the purposes of establishing a social and cultural confluence, as well as a flowing pedestrian and public transportation interchange.
Contextual and complementary environmental graphics juxtapose the crisp exterior forms and modern interior lines to give an identifiable regional story to the project. Inspired by the volcanic activity of the Eifel region, large multi-level light voids have been accentuated with custom graphics designed as stylized abstraction of the stratigraphy and the forms of the region’s various geologic features.
The effects have been threefold - bringing new color and pleasing visual elements to an otherwise drab part of the local landscape; strengthening a sense of civic identity by drawing parallels to the specific natural environment of the surrounding area; and providing a central gathering place for commerce and culture.
