Hi! My name is Flora Xie. I am a first year Bachelor of Arts and Law student at the University of Auckland.
The easiest way for me to connect to New Zealand is through the things that are tangible - like the land and the environment. We are shaped by the things that surround us, and so despite the fact that I was brought up in China, who I've become and the things that I enjoy are heavily influenced by the environment in New Zealand. I have always had a passion for things that are visually pleasing and stimulating, so the landscape and scenery in Aotearoa has me absolutely mesmerised. Recently I discovered a passion for photography and capturing the small moments in life, the subtle things in everyday that we can enjoy for their simplicity, but also the grander themes like vulnerability and love. The images here are a compilation of the more simplistic, everyday ways I enjoy and connect with this beautiful country: admiring the breathtaking views on top of a hill by the beach, indulging in fruits that can be grown in our own backyards, and being able to relax with a book and a warm mug of tea after a long and tiring day. I love to capture people in the vibrant colours that nature has to offer, but also black and white images, as it allows the subject to blend into the background seamlessly, bringing nature and people closer together. The environment should not be taken for granted. Nature provides us with so many goods on a daily basis, and we should show more appreciation for the simple things in our lives. This is what I wish to convey through my work.
Thank you for your consideration!
