Tonight was the last talk at the Adult Education Center about sustainability. The Subject was Sufficiency.
The first half of Dr. Stengels talk carried one message... "we may already be environmentally fu__ed".
The second half dealt with grass roots, or community strategies for mitigation, problems associated with societal change and discussion of those strategies and problems.
I found it deeply disturbing, how many people in the audience still insisted "that the politicians do something!" or who wanted to talk about some subset of sustainability which has <5% environmental impact. It's up to us to change, and we have to start with the big environmental impact areas first.
The big three environmental impact areas are:
There are so many simple measures that make a huge difference to your energy environmental footprint. Most are no-brainers, when you read the above list, like reducing your meat consumption significantly and not eating factory farmed meat, using public transport and your bicycle more, asking your company to implement a Teleworking policy, turn off those airconditioners, use or create "libraries of things"...
The list is long, and to be honest, none of it would mean a significant impact on our lives.
After that there followed a lively discussion at the English Conversation group and the evening was complete!
