Open Letter to the 32C3 Orga Team:
Oh no! I just found out that the CCC has canceled the Food Hacking Base Assembly at the 32C3!
The reason seems to be that it is felt that they are competing with commercial vendors.
I can't describe how contrary this is to my understanding of what these events are about.
In 2013 I was with the Warpzone Village at the Ohm 2013 - a huge hacker meet-up of about 3000 hackers, artists, educators, NGOs and others in the Netherlands.
We were lucky enough to be positioned right next to the Food Hacking Base.
Together with others from the Warpzone, Food Hacking Base and innocent passers by who stopped to gawk just a little too long, we constructed a covered workshop area, food preparation Tables and Hexayurt refrigerator. We swapped information about fermenting and temperature controlled cabinets. One of our members printed an ice cream machine from scratch. We attended workshops on everything from brewing to molecular cooking.
In short, the FHB was not just a kitchen, but an information-hub, an education-center and a meeting place for people who love to work with food.
