I found this photo a few months ago on Flickr and fell in love with it, but I wasn’t sure why. It’s such an odd capture—not a photo you would traditionally consider “great”, but it grabbed me and stuck with me. It was taken during the last day of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, on the road between Boulder and Golden, Colorado.
Recently, ROLLIT started following photographer Andy Bokanev on Instagram. It turns out that he was the photographer. He recently posted the photo and noted that a friend had a similar inexplicable love of the photo. Andy shares what he sees in it, in his own words:
There is always a strange feeling on the last day of a stage race. Some keep fighting until the final 100m, others are completely checked out and going through the motions, looking forward to the end-of-the-race party and the next race on the calendar. I don't know why, but this photograph always brings back that feeling of the final stage. That feeling of the impending post stage race hangover.
Andy is also on Ello: @bokanev.
