For Rachel (September 2016)
Dearest Little Blackbird,
You're chirping furiously
From across the grey veil,
But I can't hear your song.
The short distance between life
And death is too infinitely long.
Vigilant Little Blackbird,
I know you're watching over me.
You've changed, but you're not gone,
You’re more like water boiled away:
The black spectre in red lipstick,
That haunts every dark hallway.
Little Blackbird I wake up smelling
Your floral scent I used to hate,
In blue twilight of my dark room
As if you’d just walked though.
Staring at the door I hold my breath
Expecting you will come back too.
Darling Little Blackbird,
Where and why did you go?
I still feel your gentle touch,
In the vacancy between my lungs.
Your absence hangs in that ivory cage,
You left us far too young.
"Don't be sad," you would tell me,
You always hated when I cried,
"I'm perched here waiting on the edge
And I'll never leave your side.
I'm icing down champagne for when
I see your face again."
Thank you Little Blackbird,
My sweet forever friend.
I wrote this shortly after losing one of my closest friends a year ago. That's her in the photo, she loved a good selfie. It was hard to write about her in a way that wasn't a bit abstract, because I was overwhelmed at the time, and for long after. On the anniversary of her death, I wrote another, more grounded poem that focuses on us, and how I remember her, which I will be posting next
