Today I met a man who was strange. A man who had an incredible brain, he saw mathematics in the most beautiful and simple way - his intuition of very advanced concepts was inspiring.
He wasn't socially normal, he lived on his little cloud where he enjoyed the beauty of probing into irregular topologies and used words like "magical" "wonderful" and "amazing" genuinely. The world was a fascinating and intriguing mathematics classroom. Social norms however had never imprinted themselves onto his sense of self.
He didn't act like most people but instead of distancing myself in an effort to conform to social norms - in order to maintain a level of "cool" I dived into his world. He taught me to be strange with him. Never have I spent an afternoon being so authentic and as a result so openly positive. The coffee chatter wasn't about annoying flatmates, work stress or bad drivers. It was about elegant theories, the importance of super mario and slightly awkward fist bumps.
Today I was taught the power of authentic positivity over a coffee. Next time you meet someone who is weird, who acts in a way that seems strange and uncool, join them. It might be the best day you've had.
