Explore the boundaries of what’s understood as contemporary art and not. A visual language where the relationship between the exposed works are in the intermediate space between the very obvious and very stilted, generating a direct subtle connection to each other.

Facultative Works was founded from the idea of working only with the experimental and fascinating projects during the free time for fun. After a while FW turned into a more significant studio, but the main approach to work didn’t change. The studio prefers the holistic approach to design by working in the different fields such as illustration, identity, sound, editorial and furniture design.

Julia Kwon (@juliakwon)
Julia Kwon sews interpretative bojagi—Korean object-wrapping cloths historically created since the early Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910)—and wraps hallow human-scale figures with them to comment on the objectification of Asiatic female bodies. Further, she embeds patterns from contemporary sociopolitical events to challenge the notion of authenticity and examine the complexities of constructing identity within the context of globalism, cultural hybridity, and intersectionality. Artist (Collect - Disassemble - Create)
In my art, I study people and their mutual connections. These relationships are a recurring theme. My work is an ongoing study, and each single work is a link, a next step in my process. Each work teaches me something about my relationship towards others, about mutual connections and bonds.
Loneliness, power, control, dependency and trust are recurring themes.
