This is a one-of-a-kind garment with a shawl collar, hand-frame knit and hand finished in 100% genuine shetland wool from Shetland to create a vibrant mosaic of colour... a generous-sized traditional sweater.
It's the test-knit garment for my range of KnitKits and knitting patterns at www.goodengansey.com
Two colours are knitted into each row, the colours alternately carried behind the work to create a soft and lightweight double-layer fabric which has excellent insulation qualities - wonderful to snuggle into on a cool day.
This Robe of Glory sweater design was created in 1979, inspired by the traditional fairisle knitting of the fisher folk of the islands off the northern coasts of Scotland.
It is said that a special sweater would be knitted for a young man at the time that he reached adolescence.
The motif sequence tells a life story in symbols.
