In the series of paintings called Killing the Messenger, I am working primarily in oil on canvas. I create large format, usually figurative, contemporary paintings.
At the heart of my practice is a commitment to cultivate a sense of curiosity as I explore our shared psychosocial landscape. Indeed, curiosity is my flashlight as I probe for cracks in programmed conditioning and invite deeper questioning of the subject matter. Central to the work is the recognition that the viewing experience is a collection of the viewer’s prejudices, memories, ego and culture. Colorful, sometimes challenging, visually inviting compositions are invitations to question these constructs.
Color test patterns, cropped, divided or juxtaposed images create visual maps that encourage and invite deeper thought. These are techniques I also use to promote the self-awareness of the observer, to challenge the boundaries of the viewer and the viewed and to push the presence of the artist away - to kill the messenger.
