Banded Birds Oil on Canvas 2018
Gregory Ellis is an emerging Boulder, Co artist. His paintings
explore how we relate to and and interpret our world. He is especially interested in subverting the mental checklist we use to create easy or lazy judgements. Large, boldly colored, often figurative canvases engage our eyes but paralyze the checklist. Curiosity triggers a unique and evolving relationship with each piece. Like David Salle, Ellis often creates a tension by partitioning his paintings -almost like a road map that leads you on a journey. Ellis' work has been selected to regional and national exhibitions.
Banded Birds is a sympathetic look at how young people in today's society are monitored by their parents thru computer and phone use. Though the kids enjoy certain freedoms offered by phones and social media, they are involuntarily signing up to be watched nearly every waking minute. Parents spy in classrooms thru video cameras; parents follow every move of their teens when they are out with friends; know every score of every test, quiz and homework thru campus portals, etc. Much like a bird is banded and watched, measured, observed and tracked - so too are our children and at what cost?
