Whats on Grey's Worktable Tonight? 10-18-17
Tonight I am continuing work on two new head sculptures for the Seeking Absolution series. One of the themes of this series is that I include some kind of head topper on each sculpture. In this case I am using a simple styrofoam skull which has been attached to one of the heads and the used the melt process to degrade the foam. The other head actually has a small pewter statue of Gandalf the Grey coming out of the head which I found in a box of used items at a second hand store last year. Its always interesting matching up the ephemera placed on the top of the heads with the faces. Not all faces would fit the item attached to it, so I have to really consider what fits best. In the image below, this head uses three elements for its head gear. The first is copper and silver wound together to form the crown with the handle of a drawer attached to the front (that purple thing) and then simply a childs plastic dragon jutting out from the front. The result is a pretty cool looking head piece.
I like the process of reusing items such as drawer handles. Things that would not naturally ever be considered for a sculpture are transformed in the process of art.
