Baby Monitors and the Paranormal
Baby monitors are typically used to monitor a baby’s activity while it is sleeping or playing so the parent can take care of the
everyday chores around the house. Monitors come in several different styles with some only having the ability to capture sounds,
while others come with video and audio capabilities. These not only let the parents hear what’s going on in the baby’s room, it
allows the parents to see what’s going on as well.
However, baby monitors have become a useful tool for paranormal investigators. Some paranormal investigators use baby
monitors to keep tabs on the more remote locations of their investigation or locations that are not being covered by an investigator.
Baby monitors act as open microphones in whatever area they are placed. The monitors that have only the audio capabilities are
useful in picking up EVP’s or electronic voice phenomenon. These monitors however can be false positive because they have been
known to pick up radio frequencies, like police band radios, ham radios, and sometimes even cell phone transmissions. That’s why
most paranormal investigators rely on the monitors equipped with both audio and video capabilities.
I have done some research on baby monitors and how they link in with paranormal activity and have found that there have been
many reports of people capturing some type of paranormal activity or EVP’s on their monitors. Some of the reports have ranged from
voices, orbs, strange lights and mists and even apparitions. One woman reported that she saw the mobile above the crib spinning and
playing music. One woman reported that she heard children laughing. There have been many other reports such as these. My sister
told me that one night she had put her youngest daughter down for the night and she had gone downstairs. She said that just a few
minutes after she had put her down she heard the baby (she was just beginning to talk) laughing and talking to someone in the room.
She said her husband went upstairs to check on her and he yelled for her to come up. She said when she got up there her husband
had a very strange look on his face and it was obvious that he had been frightened by something. She said that he told her when he
walked into the room there was a woman standing by the crib and it looked like our mom. She had passed away a year or so before
and had never seen my sister’s children. She said that they had several encounters similar to that over the next couple of years.
I have had similar experiences with a baby monitor as well. We lived in a house that was notorious for its paranormal activity. This
property had an old store (built 1859) which I had a consignment shop and our house was probably 200 feet behind the store. During
this time I had a 13 year old son, so I got me a baby monitor and placed the receiver in his room and the speaker in the store so I could
monitor him and his friends when they were at the house. With me at the store I couldn’t very well run back and forth to check on what
they were doing.
One day while he was at school, I always had the monitor on while at the store, I had the monitor on and it picked up a call from a
Highway Patrol officer’s radio. His transmission came through loud and clear. The officer was close in the area when he made the call
because just seconds after picking up the transmission, he came by the store. So these monitors will sometimes pick up radio waves.
A few days later I had the monitor on, again my son was at school, and I started picking up static. It would come in and out, but I didn’t
pay it a whole lot of attention because I figured it was trying to pick up another radio transmission. A few minutes later I heard voices
coming over the speaker, but I couldn’t make out what they were saying. It sounded as if there were two or three people carrying on a
conversation. I went to the house, but there was no one there. I got the eeriest feeling. I hurried from the house and went back to the store.
The voices continued for several minutes and stopped. There were several other occasions when I caught EVP’s on that monitor, only to find nothing in the house. On one occasion it sounded as if someone was in the house tearing it apart, but when I went to see, nothing. I turned the monitor off.
Baby monitors can be useful tools, not only for monitoring babies, but also for paranormal investigations as well. I have had some
interesting experiences with them and so has my sister. After reading other accounts of paranormal activity regarding baby monitors I have
decided to invest in another one. It will be interesting to see what I capture.
