Early twentieth century Western art blows my mind. A few years ago I walked very slowly through the National Gallery of Canada's chronologically organized European art collection, losing myself completely in it for a couple of hours (note: Philip Glass' "Glassworks" is the ultimate album for this). ⠀
Finally drifting into the twentieth century, I felt as if I was entering an alien world. The change in the work was jarring. It gave me a very real sense of how shocking the events of the time must have felt: the technological advancements & the promise of a new century alongside the terrifying destruction of total war. For me, the art of the time conveys this so much better than history books ever can. ⠀
This piece from 1916 is Jacques Lipchitz' "Seated Figure" (photo by me) and is one of the works that had such an impact on me that day.
