"The petrol-cults were known for their ferocity. Their
priests would take live slaves and force them to build squirming, living pyramids out of their own naked bodies. After these monuments were built the priests would pour the blood of the earth upon them and light them ablaze. The pyramid would buckle under the weight of so much human suffering, and the burning slaves would start to crush and trample each other in an escape to scatter. The handful of them that were lucky enough to get a few yards away from the macabre offering to petroleum gods were knocked down by zealots and held to the ground as the priests uttered their evocations and consecratory rites. They were adorned in cyclopean metal face-masks and rubber squares sewn with insulated wires overlapping each other like a masons' bricks.
We found a troop of the cultists cut down on the road, their heads had been taken off and entrails were pulled out of their swollen bellies and arranged in strange geometric patterns. Bullet casings littered the area, and broken axes and spears were held tight in the grips of the dead men. The air was thick and moist and smelled of iron. The ground was dyed red."
