“Pondering Hate & Yoda”
He furled his brow thoughtfully and processed with those deep blue eyes of his which move me, “I can occasionally enjoy man hating, I don’t think too high of us either sometimes.”
I felt my spirit become passionate. He didn’t realize how much of a sensitive such he had just hit, or perhaps he did… I said, “I don’t like man hating. It makes me cringe. It does not do well to attempt to fix a problem by reversing it. There are certain masculine behaviors that some men display more than others which are laughable, the same can also be said for females.”
He then threw out a totally random line which I think of in my head as one of his squirrel distractions. He considers his spirt animal to be a grey squirrel, so the analogy fits. “I got a bird feeder at a garage sale for a quarter.” I have learned that he purposefully throws down these distractions during subjects he considers difficult to lighten the mood. Often they are appreciated, but sometimes they are frustrating rabbit/squirrel trails.
I smiled and nodded before I continued the subject before the distraction, “I have had plenty of people hate me for being from a rich family. Reverse discrimination doesn’t fix anything and can also be hurtful. I think the less hate around the better.”
He looked both pleased and thoughtful. “Living in a college town for so long, I have heard a lot from newly enlightened feminists. I have learned to be amused by it. With healthy minds, man hating doesn’t stick around for too long. It is a stage. “
I added to his thought, “There is real feminine oppression. I have lived in and subjected myself to it. However, it is the ideas that cause a lack of equality that should be rejected. This is very different than rejecting an entire people group. When we single out a single group as being responsible for something we don’t like in the world, that is racism at its worst and the type of thinking which caused the Holocaust. It is dangerous even if the group being hated is the oppressors versus the oppressed. Hate never solves anything. However, I can come off my soup box now if you would prefer.”
He got a playful smile and said, “Anger leads to suffering, suffering leads to hate, hate leads to the dark side… that was misquoted Yoda.”
I was slightly insulted he thought he would have to tell me he was trying to quote Star Wars, “I knew you were attempting to quote Star Wars before you were done Newt. However, yes—exactly! This is what I was trying to say. Even slightly misquoted Star Wars quotes are always welcome. The original is canon, “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”
He nodded, “Misandry is equally wrong as misogyny. It can move the balance closer to the equilibrium. When we have evolved as a society, we will need neither.”
I smiled, his continual hope in mankind is one of the things I find inspiring about him. However, I tend to think we have more of an entropy problem going on overall than extropy. Yet, it is comforting to find another who also believes we can continue to find more room for love than hate.
