Don’t be different!
I think many of us in the creative business have been there; trying to stand out in a herd of sheeps by trying to be different. I’ve been there, and you also in one way or another. It’s a world where the one who can be seen all the time claims to be a star by their fans, or hails as a genius by the critics. Being the black sheep just because it’s cool.
Of course it’s the same in every other community, country or business, even out in the streets where you have no relation to your fellow pedestrians, people trying to be so different that it’s painful even for themselves to live up to.
Don’t misunderstand me, I do love people who are different, but there’s a difference between distinctions, which is very important to understand - and the gap between them is ocean of talent and philosophies.
We can all look back to our teenage school years, where friends and enemies, sometime ourselves, tried to be different. I’ve seen schoolmates go from jocks to punks over a weekend, or geeky girls to showgirls from monday to friday. That’s part of growing up, but some people just continues to do so over and over again. Then we have those who deliberately chose opinions just because those opinions is hurtful to some or “controversial”, just to stand out. Yeah, there’s so-called politicians making a profitable career from having different opinions just for the sake of having different opinions… well, that’s their path. But do you really want to be like them?
Here’s the thing: don’t be different, be yourself.
You will reach the state of truly being different if you just become yourself. If you become the person you want to be without taking into account what other people think of you or see you as, then you will be “different” without selling yourself with shallow opinions and attention craving behaviour. Being yourself is not about wanting to be seen all the time, it’s to find comfort and happiness in who you are without letting anyone get in your way and still have integrity. Your heart is the boss and your mind is the follower, never forget that. Just using your mind is like a Christmas tree filled with colorful decorations, it can be beautiful but just added bling blong to something that’s beautiful and natural by itself.
The road to fully understand the difference between being different and being yourself is a road filled with insights, one piece of the puzzle after another. Some of you might never reach that conclusion and some of you might just think I’m an idiot for stating the obvious, which is perfectly fine to me, as long as you feel happy with who you are. The heart is the boss and the mind is the follower, and it's important to follow your heart. This doesn't mean you should stop thinking rational, the expression “follow your heart” is kinda like following the advice of an insight, something so deeply rooted you know it’s correct.
For example, it took me years to totally land in the insight that I’m a Satanist, but I know I’ve been one since I was a child - even if I didn’t used the title until much, much later. Outside meeting my husband, the two biggest moments in my life was the realization I was gay, and when I for the umpteenth time read Anton LaVey’s The Satanic Bible and understood that Satanist is the word I now can use to describe myself without being different - because I am myself, the one I was born to be.
If happiness and comfort means you’re an accountant who likes to take a walk and feed the birds down by the nearest water, that’s you being yourself. You don’t need all the other things, you’ve found satisfaction in that. If happiness and comfort means you’re a street performer who want to split your tongue and do suspension with hooks through your skin, that’s you being yourself. As long you don’t pretend to be someone you aren’t, as long you don’t do it to impress other people.
Be a white or black sheep, as long as “yourself” comes before “different”.
