Other People’s Kids.
The illusion of good and evil creates the dangerous notion that we live in a black and white world. I would say that the most common misconception in people is that there’s no gray scales in life. They thrive on the idea that animals like us only can conform to the basic concept of good/evil, and absolutely nothing in-between. But when they do something that someone else might consider evil, like cheat with the taxes, drive too fast or engage in racist or homophobic slur; they’re the one that’s right, everyone else is wrong. It’s instant conflict, just because of this delusion.
It’s a controversial subject to bring up, but I look at it this way:
A. If an Al Qaeda terrorist bombs a skyscraper in what they officially call a holy war, killing thousands of innocent people, it’s a good thing in the eyes of their supporters and themselves. But it’s evil to the rest of the world.
B. On the other hand, if the United States army bombs a village in the name of their official war, killing thousands of people, they’re doing something good according to their citizens and fans - and something evil according to their enemies.
Yeah, it’s all the same: two armies, controlled and brainwashed by governments, the military and politicians, doing the exact same thing - and based on what side you’re on, you’re either GOOD or EVIL. It’s not really a question of morality anymore (morality is only a shallow construction to make us feel bad when we do something we actually like), it’s just ignorance and stupidity.
That of course doesn't excuse the death of millions of people and destruction of cities and countries, but it just has nothing to do with good and evil. It has to do with what side you’re on. It’s all about the indoctrination that we’re living in a black and white world, someone else is evil because he or she won’t agree with you or your government, and the opposite.
We all have heard the expression “other people’s kids”, which puts forth the questionable theory that it’s never your own offspring that’s evil, it’s everyone else’s. When someone throws a stone on the head of your little brat or bite them in the finger, it’s always your kid that’s good and someone else is evil. Parents tend to ignore what their own kids have done - all the damn time, and in many cases they refuse to understand that their kid might actually deserve to a get a knuckle in the eye from someone else's smelly kid out in the schoolyard. Of course, somewhere else, around another kitchen table, the parents of the so-called guilty party, is sitting and whining about the EXACT same thing.
Good and evil, black and white. It’s all so pathetic. The best thing is to let it all go and see the world as a game of chess, a game you’re not playing yourself. From your seat in the distance you will see how the hands move around the chess pieces like the static, submissive figures they are and how much freedom they’re missing outside the chess board.
Does it feel amazing to live in a world where other people’s kids don’t exist anymore? You know, in the end, it’s all child’s play.
