Every time I open a news page and I find that they want to charge people for reading the news I feel we're getting closer to the end of freedom. Many would argue that journalism today just is a way to generate advertising money, and they're correct (an executive at TV4, a popular TV channel in Sweden once told a colleague of mine that the stuff we produced was just fillers in between advertising), but the news flow is also important to teach the readers, to make them open their eyes and minds and when it's soon is impossible to read important news without paying there will be an ever hard fall for those without money, for society itself. A chosen few will be able to learn what's happening out there and the rest will live their lives without basic knowledge, they'll give up their freedom because they just can't afford it.
What will happen, and it's happening, is that "free" news pages will pop up like never before, spreading made up news (ironically the real "fake news" the conservative right wingers are so fond of talking about), news produced by businesses and extremist political organizations, and that will be the truth people are going to live by. It's a sad world we're living in right now. I know I can't save anyone, I can just watch it crumble underneath our societies while I'm stepping back to get a better lock, keeping a distance to it all and at least save myself and those I love, and try to hold on to what WE have until the next big adventure starts, the great unknown itself.
Sorry for sound so gloomy, I'm not actually. Just a bit worried for all those who can't save themselves. But maybe I just have to step back even more, to not get drawn into the intellectual destruction myself?
