An Encounter with a Chubby Family.
The chubby man with the Bluetooth headset in his left ear sat there with his chubby, plain wife and two chubby kids, a boy and girl in their pre-teens - both leaning against the floor like collapsing sacks of seeds against the wall of a barn. I heard he say something about "take your seats over there..." but first didn't understand it was aimed at us.
As I looked around I noticed how empty the Thai restaurant was except us and the chubby family, all four sitting around a table, right at the entrance without talking to each other. Me and G, my husband, ate our food, surprisingly tasty, and payed quickly. The waitress looked at us as we were kids, family or just high. She was smiling a bit too much.
When we passed the chubby man with the Bluetooth set in his left ear I heard him talk again, this time more passive-aggressive, "Do you think it's the world championship in competitive eating?" with a loud voice. His family didn't move, staring down at their food and eating it like pigs on Valium. "What did you say?", I turned around and answered the man. He repeated the same colorless words; "Do you think it's the world championship in competitive eating?"
He looked at us with empty, humorless shark eyes. "We've been working the whole day" I said for some stupid reason. The man shook his head discreetly, almost like no movement at all, and intellectually left us.
As we walked form the restaurant we promised to never talk about it again.
This is a true experience me and my husband had a while ago, and it’s probably the strangest experienced I ever had. I know, I know. It doesn't seem much now, reading it here: an ordinary Thai restaurant with ordinary guests. But something was extremely off.
I remember how the air, the lights, both outside and inside the place was different. It was foggier and more colorful and I felt like I was in a dream or just in a dreamlike state of mind. My husband felt a similar feeling, but maybe not as strong as me. It felt like we entered a set-up, a staged happening - where everyone played their parts and we just happened to walked in, disturbing their peace - but instead of asking us to leave they continued to play their game.
Was what this? Maybe just tiredness combined with hunger mixed with the cold evening spring air. Or did we enter a different timeline? An alternate reality? Another dimension? Yeah, wild thoughts considering this not so spectacular experience, but whatever it was something was very different that night.
Our minds, our brains, are amazing things - and the will to experience something different have always been important to me - but in my eyes that have always been something more… exciting. Like visiting a new place, or meeting interesting people. Or having insights. Not a late dinner at the local thai joint. I think this is the result of one or several secrets, and secrets is what makes me - and you - move forward.
The wisest thing is to not dig too deep, because a possible answer will take away the power of the mystery and life itself.
