The House That Lars Built.
One thing I learned from The House That Jack Built is the theory of Ruin Value, something German Nazi and architect Albert Speer pioneered: the buildings should be designed and constructed so they would be aesthetically beautiful ruins in the future, just like the ruins from the Roman empire - worn down and broken, but still holding an artistic power over a huge distance of time.
I like this idea, it's both absolutely bonkers and brilliant - but to be honest (don't throw me out like Cannes did with Von Trier, a totally moronic incident created by the idiots at Cannes and the media sheeps afterwards) Speer knew exactly what he was doing, and so do Von Trier. It IS very possible to admire something and tell certain stories without actually agreeing with the content. Destructive, dangerous and “immoral” people can still be human; nothing is black and white.
Von Trier deliberately toys with male victimhood - especially the one of a so-called genius. Jack is an ignorant, stupid male and his narrow view on life and hate of women (something the director have been accused of many times), but still we kinda root for him, even when he’s getting ruder and cruder. We've been taking hostage by Lars, and we gladly accept it. And just by making Jack a serial killer, with more and more elaborate kills and bigger risks, a trail of bodies, it becomes even clearer now that this is all about Lars Von Trier. When the rain flushes away the blood it’s a not-so-subtle look at Von Trier’s “luck” over the years, always getting away with his shenanigans. The House That Jack Built is egocentric as hell, but also extremely funny and sensitive. He might be trolling us and the critics, but hey… that’s perfectly fine to me.
Is this his swan song? Is this the last of Lars? It could work like that, but I doubt he will be able to stay away from the art - and the headlines. He needs more bodies, more kills, before he’s done in this world.
The question is, what is Von Trier's ruins? Is it his co-workers, or his movies? Is it the audience? Or is it everything at once, a house built of madness and art?
Will it still be beautiful in a thousand years?
I bet it will.
