Don't turn the other cheek.
Through my years as a kid and teenager in the Pentecostal movement in Sweden I encountered one insane thing after another; ideas that just seemed to be made up on the spot by power hungry pastors and words that was considered wisdom, but obviously, for the sane person, was pure stupidity. One of the things that started my skeptical approach to religion (I was pretty young at the time - maybe eight or nine years old) and made me question the whole idea of christianity and being a god-fearing member in a sect-ish congregation was the following verses, Matthew 5:39-40:
“39. But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.”
I’ve seen decent, and on the surface, intelligent people without questioning authority give away everything they have to those with power positions in the church. I’ve seen women suffering under abusive husbands just because they’ve been taught that they should turn the other cheek and accept what’s happening to them and be a loyal submissive wife. I’ve seen so many people getting hurt from the INSANE idea of choosing defeat just because the bible says so.
Of course, many “modern” Christians don’t follow this literally anymore, but it’s still there to inject guilt and a fake sense of being a good human being; because a good christian should never show greed, which IS the premise of all organized religions - just the fact that they have no problem with not paying taxes (not counting the Church of Satan of course, where paying tax is mandated), putting millions upon millions in the bank accounts of fat preachers and investering in hysterically expensive new church buildings.
I wonder how many thousands, maybe millions of humans through the ages, have suffered the consequences from accepting death and torture from their enemies, or just quietly living with the fact that they could have lived good lives - for generations - if they just didn’t turn that other damn cheek to those who caused them pain? By doing so, like a dog rolling over on its back, you won’t just suffer horrible things - you’re also telling your opposition, whoever they are, that it’s okay for them to do so to other people.
It’s a matter of self-respect, my friends, which by itself can be a pretty hard thing - I know, but listen to me; if you give up, if you tell those that want to hurt you, physically, mentally, economically, that you will do what they say just because a heavenly entity says so, you and your loved ones will get hurt and you will turn into a gathering of mindless fools. If someone uses their ego on you, why not use your ego back? What’s the sin of that? Do you really think it’s a sin to show pride? Do you really think you’ll go to hell because of fighting back?
Even if you’re not a believer of a god or something else I’m pretty sure many of you still feel guilt for hitting back and chose to stay quiet and suffer instead. But if you talk back you will break that spell they’ve thrown upon you. Use your magic back, greater or lesser, and show them who you really are.
