The gem isn't the storytelling, nor is it the story, - not that either are any less than brilliant in and of themselves - but the way the two feed off of each other in such a symbiotic manner that it's impossible not to become completely enmeshed in the moment.
Dickens was clearly and naturally gifted; I'm a much better person for reading it. Better late than never, I suppose.
