Capitalism doesn't care if you die.
This, this is what I have been trying to tell people. The new cases per day never went down. At best they leveled out for a little bit, and that was only because things were closed. It was never safe to re-open. For there to be a second wave the first wave would have had to ended, it didn't. This spike is just the first wave continuing to gain steam.
For things to get better, for the first wave to actually go down, a lot of things need to happen. A lot of things have to close and close hard, more than just your precious haircuts and nail salons.
First, there needs to be a massive amount of testing done, for everyone, I mean all 300 million Americans kind of level testing. Everyone, probably at least twice. By my count that's over half a billion tests needed, at a minimum. To date the US has done less than 10 million, or about 1.7% of the minimum amount needed.
Second, there needs to contact tracing, A LOT of it. Some states are able to hire people for this, some are relying on volunteers, but the fact is there aren't enough people to do this work. Please, if you have the time and are able, Google where you can assist in this critical work.
Third, people need to stay the fuck home. (And I'm not talking about protesters, they need to be out doing what they are doing) The list of critical businesses that need to remain open needs to get a lot shorter and much harder restrictions on how such business can operate need to be put in place. No more pick up and go. I'm talking contactless delivery at most, maybe. And this needs to happen for a lot longer than you think it does. Think on the scale of the rest of this summer (at a minimum) and probably well into the fall.
Finally, and this may seem out of place but I assure you it is not, VOTE. The response by our politicians has been abysmal. Some have done okay, but most have not. Starting at the top, the plans and teams in place to respond appropriately to this kind of thing were dismantled early on in this administration. When this situation arose many politicians lied about the depth of what we were facing and continue to lie about it now. They are diverting much needed resources to the wealthy and ignoring the crisis on the ground for the rest of us. And it's not just voting at the top, down ballot voting is just as if not more critical. Defiant governors/state/county/city officials who have fought back against the ineptitude of the administration are sorely needed to reign in those politicians that just don't care if you die. They care about capitalism, and I believe I've covered what that means. Please make sure you are registered and you vote all the way down the ballot.
